Article: "The Age-Old Problem of 'Fake News'" (Smithsonian)

"The Age-Old Problem of 'Fake News'" is an article from the Smithsonian with perfect timing for the current election year, or any year for that fact with information being disseminated through the press (in John Adams' day and today) and now through social media. If we go further back in time and look at any era in historical context, we can always find instances of the same.

But this begs us the question: How can a Library be a part of a solution? Libraries do their best - not perfect, just their best, to find vetted sources of varying opinions and points of view. When asked, we can provide information and reference material. We do our best as Library staff not to judge the material with bias. As information professionals, the concept of "fact checking" is a part of our very nature but can only find information insomuch as we have the resources. It is up to you, the reader, to make that judgement for yourself.

Click here or the image below to view the article and try and think of ways that you can do your part to see all sides before passing judgement.

RB Digital and Overdrive?

With OverDrive’s recent acquisition of RBdigital, Culpeper County Library's will be transferring all ebooks and eaudiobooks from RBdigital to a new OverDrive platform.

We encourage all patrons who haven't already done so to visit our Overdrive digital library at http://brdc.overdrive.com and download the free Libby app to become familiar with how it works and browse our digital catalog.

Our transfer is scheduled (as of now) for Oct. 6th and access to ebooks and eaudiobooks will be disconnected on the RBD app around 8 am on that day. A message will be posted on the app by RB Digital a week before the transfer to let you know. Information will also be posted on the website soon. As of right now, all streaming content and magazines will remain on the RBD app, including Acorn, IndieFlix, Great Courses, and Quello so make sure you don’t remove RB Digitial from your devices just ye. Accessing streaming and magazines on the app WILL NOT be disrupted during the transfer.

If you currently have a book checked out in the RBdigital app, it will be available through the remainder of the lending period, so you can finish reading without disruption or risk of losing your place in the book. Holds will not be moved, but you may export your Transaction History from the RBdigital website by accessing My Account > Profiles. You can place holds on those titles again in Libby.

If you have any questions, please feel free to give us a call at Culpeper County Library and speak to a member of our staff by calling 540-825-8691.

Culpeper Valor Awards

The Culpeper Chamber of Commerce's Valor Awards event is to recognize the efforts of Culpeper County's public safety personnel. These individuals go above and beyond the call of duty every day and put their lives on the line for our community. This is our way of saying "Thank You".

This event is open to the entire community!

Join us for the evening and show your support to our local Firefighters, EMTs and Police departments. This is to include: Brandy Station Volunteer Fire Department, Culpeper County Animal Control, Culpeper County Volunteer Fire Department, Culpeper County Volunteer Rescue Squad, Culpeper Office of Emergency Services, Little Fork Volunteer Fire & Rescue Squad, Reva Volunteer Fire & Rescue company, Rapidan Volunteer Fire Department, Richardsville Volunteer Fire Department & Rescue Squad, Salem Volunteer Fire & Rescue, E911 Dispatch, Culpeper Town Police, Culpeper County Sheriff’s Office, and Virginia State Police.

Dinner, dessert, program and awards ceremony!

The ceremony will take place in two parts.  The first part of the program is an opportunity to highlight each company and station.  Each organization will receive an appreciation award for their service to the Culpeper community.

Following the appreciation portion of the program, the Chamber will give the Valor Awards.  These awards will be given to individuals or teams for a specific act of extraordinary bravery and exceptional valor while in the line of duty.  It is not the intent of this meritorious award to be given to an entire department/agency/squad. This award should be reserved for an individual or team that has gone above and beyond the normal duties on a specific incident.

Get your tickets today. You wont want to miss this!

Or Honor a Local Hero for $50 - This allows us to have representation from all departments at the event and gets your name or organization name listed on the program, website and slideshow!
