How to Spot Fake News, Malicious website, overall bunk

As we get into the final 100 days of the Presidential Election year, please do your best to spot fake news, malicious websites, and the like.

A good rule of thumb is that if it looks fishy, it probably is.

Take a look at this info-graphic from the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions.

Libraries are here to help you sort through the sources to discover accurate and up to date information. If you want current, vetted sources of information, use Culpeper County Library's listing of Journals, Magazines, & Newspapers found on http://youseemore.com/culpeper/contentpages.asp?loc=159 or go to cclva.org, hover to the Research tab at the top, select General Research, and scroll down to Journals, Magazines, & Newspapers. Another place to check good magazines is using RB Digital and their magazine services that you can use in an app on your smartphone or tablet!

See the Information Desk at Culpeper County Library for details.

Non-Fiction that reads like Fiction

Sometimes you want the information from a non-fiction book but you don't want it so academic sounding. That's where Novelist Plus can help!

Novelist Plus, a service available by clicking on Books & More on the left hand side of the Culpeper County Library homepage  and clicking on Novelist Plus for where you're currently sitting (There's one for in-library use and remote/at home access).

By entering "GX nonfiction that reads like fiction" into the keyword search bar with the GX capitalized, you'll get a list of titles that have been sourced by other librarians working with Novelist on just such a thing.

If you need assistance, feel free to stop by the Information Desk for assistance.

Graphic Novels aren't just for kids!

At bit late, but July is Graphic Novels Month!

Graphic novels are a great way to see the character emotions and get those subtle nuances that the author intends but may not be interpreted. The language and vocabulary is very specific to ensure that the right word not only fits in the bubble but fits what action. Oh and they're really fun to read!

Find many classic titles at Culpeper County Library for books such as "Anne Frank's diary" : the graphic adaptation of the Diary of Anne Frank, "Beowulf", "Animal Farm", and many more!

All these are located in the Non-Fiction section 741.5. Many titles are also available in Young Adult 741.5 too!

2020 Census

The 2020 Census is upon us!

Health clinics. Fire departments. Schools. Even roads and highways. (And of course Libraries!!!) The census can shape many different aspects of your community.

  • Census results help determine how billions of dollars in federal funding flow into states and communities each year.
  • The results determine how many seats in Congress each state gets.
  • It's mandated by the U.S. Constitution in Article 1, Section 2: The U.S. has counted its population every 10 years since 1790.

Starting July 27th, US Census workers will be here at Culpeper County Library every Monday (10-1 pm) and Wednesday (1-5 pm) for the next several weeks. Stop by their table for assistance on filling out the census or to ask questions.

Some interest for parents and families (copied directly)

Virginia Cooperative Extension, in partnership with NC State, invites you to join
Balancing Life: Back to School??
Friday, July 17 from 10:00-10:30 am
As we near back to school time, a great deal of uncertainty remains. Is schooling going to be virtual, in-person for part of the week, or a hybrid? How are families planning to balance child supervision with job responsibilities? Are parents ready to help children with their at-home learning assignments? In what ways are families preparing children to be face to face in a socially-distanced manner at school? With the varied situations and options related to the return to schools, many families are feeling challenged with decisions, planning and knowing how to prepare their children. This is especially tough when there is still so much unknown. This session will highlight some of those concerns and share ideas or resources to support families in this regard.
Please spread the word about this session via email, word of mouth, social media, etc.  This will also be livestreamed on the VCE Facebook Page.

The Balancing Life series is being held on Fridays at 10am during COVID-19. Recordings from our Balancing Life series can be found at: https://bit.ly/3dcSAnl

Culpeper Chamber of Commerce Young Professionals Charity Car Wash

The Culpeper Chamber of Commerce Young Professionals are planning two Charity Car Wash events to raise funds for their chosen charity of the year: The Culpeper Food Closet.

This outreach mission provides food and some personal care products to Culpeper families and individuals in need, approximately 3,500 meals every week.  Families are offered hope and encouragement, with three meals a day and other necessary items for all family members, depending on their referral. The Food Closet operates solely through the dedicated work of over 90 volunteers, and from donations from local businesses, schools, churches and individuals.

For every car wash 9am-5pm on both dates, $2 will be donated to this noble cause.  They will have Young Professionals at the wash scrubbing tires and drying off your vehicle once it is through the wash.

Tips in the form of monetary donations and pantry items will also be accepted and 100% will be donated to The Culpeper Food Closet!

For more details, please visit www.culpeperchamber.com or the Young Professionals event page at https://www.facebook.com/events/179114143533984/

A local charity group through Virginia Department of Social Services, Reformation Lutheran Church, and the Catholic Charities of DC would like to share (no pun intended) an opportunity to fill some bellies:

SHARE is a sustainable, social enterprise of Catholic Charities that helps anyone save money on nutritious, healthy food.  We are committed to supporting local community groups where all may participate, serve, and lead with dignity.

  • Providing wholesome and nutritious food to families and individuals at a reduced cost
  • Promoting volunteer service in our communities
  • Building partnerships with community organizations

WHO CAN PARTICIPATE?

If you eat, you qualify!  SHARE is a great equalizer in a world of great inequality.  Everyone is welcome to purchase without application, qualification, identification, or documentation. Everyone receives the same, fresh, high-quality food.

Because we purchase all the food we offer, the more who join us the STRONGER we become.

SHARE accepts organizational or business checks, credit and debit cards, EBT/SNAP benefits, money orders, gift certificates, and cash.

Here is their July menu and method of ordering.

Or you can visit the program website at www.catholiccharitiesdc.org/share/
